David Oscarson - 2012 End of Days - Roller Ball Pen Azure Blue / Gold Vermeil

THE DESIGN

A tribute to the Maya Long Count and the galactic alignment of 21 December 2012. The date is set in high relief on the cap in dot-and-bar numeration; the 7 Macaw appears upside down beneath the Milky Way on the barrel, One Hunahpu with arms outstretched, the Hero Twins, the frog and the crocodile. The 365¼-day year is represented in the temple steps on the gripping section and the ball-court symbol sits at the base of the clip. This roller ball is finished in Azure Blue with 18-karat gold vermeil over .925 sterling silver.

THE CRAFT

Hand-crafted from .925 sterling silver. Each component passes through multiple stages of precision engraving to create the guilloché pattern, then hard enamel — glass, water and metal oxides ground by hand with a mortar and pestle — is applied with a quill, kiln-fired at over 1,000 °F, filed back by hand with a diamond file and fired again until the enamel fills every valley of the engraving. The pieces are then polished and buffed to the velvet finish of true translucent hard enamel. A five-year apprenticeship is required to master the process.

THE COLLECTION

The 2012 End of Days Collection is the 14th in the David Oscarson series of Limited Edition writing instruments. Every piece is individually numbered. Each colour variation is limited to 52 pieces, for the 5,200-year Maya World Age.

THE WRITING

The roller ball version of the collection — the same sterling silver, guilloché and hard-enamel body as the fountain pen, with a capped roller ball section that takes a standard roller ball refill for an effortless, consistent line.
