David Oscarson - Black Water Snake - Roller Ball Pen Grey & Black

THE DESIGN

Created for the Year of the Black Water Snake, 2013, as the follow-up to the Black Water Dragon. The ancient Chinese symbol for Snake is inlaid in opaque black enamel on the dome of the cap; the ancient symbol for Water repeats in high relief around the top of the cap and bottom of the barrel, and the modern character for Water is inlaid at the end of the barrel. A sculpted snake coils around the cap in sterling silver. This roller ball is finished in Grey & Black with polished .925 sterling silver.

THE CRAFT

Hand-crafted from .925 sterling silver. Each component passes through multiple stages of precision engraving to create the guilloché pattern, then hard enamel — glass, water and metal oxides ground by hand with a mortar and pestle — is applied with a quill, kiln-fired at over 1,000 °F, filed back by hand with a diamond file and fired again until the enamel fills every valley of the engraving. The pieces are then polished and buffed to the velvet finish of true translucent hard enamel. A five-year apprenticeship is required to master the process.

THE COLLECTION

The Black Water Snake Collection is the 20th in the David Oscarson series of Limited Edition writing instruments. Each colour variation is limited to 88 pieces, including fountain pen and roller ball styles, and every piece is numbered.

THE WRITING

The roller ball version of the collection — the same sterling silver, guilloché and hard-enamel body as the fountain pen, with a capped roller ball section that takes a standard roller ball refill for an effortless, consistent line.
