David Oscarson - Koi - Roller Ball Pen Ruby Red / Gold Vermeil

THE DESIGN

Nishikigoi — brocaded carp — symbols of love and friendship in Japan, and a tribute to David Oscarson's 2016 trip to Tokyo. Three varieties of koi, bamboo leaves and a waterlily are rendered in high and low relief, with bubbles and petals interspersed in high relief and a guilloché ground of pond ripples spreading from each element. The bamboo motif repeats on the gripping section and clip; 鯉 (Koi) appears in high relief on the crown and David Oscarson is engraved in Japanese on the cap ring. This roller ball is finished in Ruby Red with 18-karat gold vermeil over .925 sterling silver.

THE CRAFT

Hand-crafted from .925 sterling silver. Each component passes through multiple stages of precision engraving to create the guilloché pattern, then hard enamel — glass, water and metal oxides ground by hand with a mortar and pestle — is applied with a quill, kiln-fired at over 1,000 °F, filed back by hand with a diamond file and fired again until the enamel fills every valley of the engraving. The pieces are then polished and buffed to the velvet finish of true translucent hard enamel. A five-year apprenticeship is required to master the process.

The Koi Collection is the 27th in the David Oscarson series of Limited Edition writing instruments. Produced as a numbered limited edition.

THE WRITING

The roller ball version of the collection — the same sterling silver, guilloché and hard-enamel body as the fountain pen, with a capped roller ball section that takes a standard roller ball refill for an effortless, consistent line.
