David Oscarson - Magna Carta - Roller Ball Pen Black Barrel

THE DESIGN

Commemorating the 800th anniversary of King John's sealing of the Great Charter at Runnymede on 15 June 1215. Article 39 — "No free man shall be seized, or imprisoned…" — is featured in Latin on the barrel. Each cap carries the Union Jack in translucent hard enamel and each barrel the American flag in opaque enamel; King John's primary seal crowns the cap, his secondary seal sits at the base of the barrel and the scales of justice are positioned at the base of the clip. This roller ball is finished in Black Barrel with polished .925 sterling silver.

THE CRAFT

Hand-crafted from .925 sterling silver. Each component passes through multiple stages of precision engraving to create the guilloché pattern, then hard enamel — glass, water and metal oxides ground by hand with a mortar and pestle — is applied with a quill, kiln-fired at over 1,000 °F, filed back by hand with a diamond file and fired again until the enamel fills every valley of the engraving. The pieces are then polished and buffed to the velvet finish of true translucent hard enamel. A five-year apprenticeship is required to master the process.

THE COLLECTION

The Magna Carta Collection is the 24th in the David Oscarson series of Limited Edition writing instruments. Every piece is individually numbered. Each colour variation is limited to 800 pieces, one for each year since 1215.

THE WRITING

The roller ball version of the collection — the same sterling silver, guilloché and hard-enamel body as the fountain pen, with a capped roller ball section that takes a standard roller ball refill for an effortless, consistent line.
