THE DESIGN

A tribute to Charles Lindbergh's solo nonstop flight from New York to Paris on 20–21 May 1927. The cap reproduces the instruments of the Spirit of St. Louis cockpit — compass, airspeed indicator, altimeter and fuel gauge — together with the flags displayed on the aircraft, finished in hot enamel. The barrel carries an engraved map of the 33.5-hour flight path from Roosevelt Field to Le Bourget, the points of departure and arrival marked in opaque black enamel. NYP (New York to Paris) sits in high relief at the base of the barrel and the registration N-X-211 crowns the cap; the gripping section repeats the engine-turned cowling pattern of the aircraft with Lindbergh's signature. This roller ball is finished in Sunset with polished .925 sterling silver.

THE CRAFT

Hand-crafted from .925 sterling silver. Each component passes through multiple stages of precision engraving to create the guilloché pattern, then hard enamel — glass, water and metal oxides ground by hand with a mortar and pestle — is applied with a quill, kiln-fired at over 1,000 °F, filed back by hand with a diamond file and fired again until the enamel fills every valley of the engraving. The pieces are then polished and buffed to the velvet finish of true translucent hard enamel. A five-year apprenticeship is required to master the process.

THE COLLECTION

The Spirit of St. Louis Collection is the 41st in the David Oscarson series of Limited Edition writing instruments. Every piece is individually numbered. Each colour variation is limited to 72 pieces, one for each year of Charles Lindbergh's life.

THE WRITING

The roller ball version of the collection — the same sterling silver, guilloché and hard-enamel body as the fountain pen, with a capped roller ball section that takes a standard roller ball refill for an effortless, consistent line.
