How to Season a New Humidor: A Step-by-Step Guide

A new humidor arrives dry. The Spanish cedar lining has spent weeks in a warehouse and a shipping container, and it is thirsty. If you load it with cigars on day one, the wood will draw moisture out of them for the next fortnight. Seasoning is the process of bringing that cedar up to the humidity you intend to hold, so it stops competing with your cigars for moisture.

Why seasoning matters

Cigars sit at their best between roughly 62% and 72% relative humidity. Unseasoned cedar can sit below 40%. Wood is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs and releases water depending on its surroundings, and it will take what it needs from whatever is closest. In an unseasoned humidor that means your cigars. The result is wrappers that crack, a fast hot burn, and a tight draw as the filler contracts.

Seasoning also stabilises the box. Cedar swells slightly as it takes on moisture, and that swelling is what lets the lid seat properly and hold a seal. A humidor that will not hold humidity is often simply a humidor that was never seasoned.

What you will need

  • Your new humidor, empty and at room temperature
  • A calibrated hygrometer
  • Either a pack of seasoning humidity packs, or distilled water and a clean sponge

Never use tap water. Minerals and chlorine will foul a humidification element and can leave deposits on cedar. Never use a flavoured or scented solution in a humidor you intend to use for premium cigars.

Method one: seasoning packs

This is the method we recommend, because it is difficult to get wrong. Two-way humidity packs release moisture until the enclosed air reaches their stated level, then stop. They cannot over-humidify.

  1. Wipe the interior with a dry, lint-free cloth. Do not wipe cedar with a wet cloth, which raises the grain and can cause mould spotting.
  2. Place the seasoning packs inside, spread across the floor and any trays rather than stacked in one corner.
  3. Close the lid and leave it. Resist opening it to check.
  4. After 14 days, check your hygrometer. It should read close to the pack's rating and hold steady.
  5. Swap the seasoning packs for maintenance packs at your chosen humidity, then load your cigars.

A humidor starter kit bundles the right pack count for a typical desktop box. For larger cabinets, work on roughly one size 60 pack per 25 cigars of capacity.

Method two: distilled water and a sponge

The older method still works, but it demands attention.

  1. Dampen a clean, unscented sponge with distilled water until it is moist but not dripping.
  2. Set it on a small dish or bag inside the humidor so it never touches the cedar directly. Standing water against wood causes staining and mould.
  3. Close the lid, check daily, and re-dampen the sponge as it dries.
  4. Repeat for 10 to 14 days until the hygrometer holds steady.

Calibrate your hygrometer first

Seasoning to a number you cannot trust is wasted effort. Most inexpensive hygrometers ship several points out of true. A 75% RH calibration kit tells you the size of the error so you can correct for it, or confirms the gauge is accurate.

Common mistakes

Rushing it. Two weeks feels long. A humidor seasoned in three days will drift for months afterwards.

Over-humidifying. Soaking the interior or leaving standing water invites mould and can warp the lid. Two-way packs avoid this entirely.

Loading cigars too early. If the hygrometer has not held a steady reading for at least 48 hours, the cedar is still moving.

Ignoring the trays. Dividers and trays are cedar too, and they need seasoning alongside the box.

After seasoning

Check the humidity weekly for the first month, then monthly once you trust the box. Replace humidity packs when they turn firm and crisp. If you find yourself replacing them unusually often, the seal is likely the problem rather than the packs.

If you are storing several hundred cigars or aging for the long term, a climate-controlled cabinet removes the maintenance question altogether by regulating both temperature and humidity. Our Raching cabinets arrive pre-fitted with Spanish cedar shelving and need no seasoning period of this kind.
