S.T. Dupont has spent more than 150 years making everyday objects worth keeping. Founded in Paris in 1872 by Simon Tissot-Dupont, the maison began as a workshop for fine leather travel goods — trunks, cases and document holders commissioned by royal households, heads of state, and the era's most demanding travellers.
The move into metalwork came out of necessity. When leather grew scarce in the 1940s, the house turned its craftsmen toward a smaller object: the pocket lighter. It became the piece the world knows them for — and gave them the sound. One flick, one metallic cling, unchanged since.
Lacquer followed. S.T. Dupont adopted the centuries-old Chinese technique of natural lacquer, applied by hand in successive coats and polished between each one. It remains the maison's signature finish, and the reason a single piece can take dozens of hours to complete.
Today the workshops sit in Faverges, in the French Alps, where the same house produces lighters, writing instruments, leather goods and accessories — each built to be used daily and kept for decades.
