How to Care for an S.T. Dupont Lighter: Fuel, Flints and Flame

An S.T. Dupont lighter is built to be repaired rather than replaced. The maison has serviced pieces made in the 1950s. That longevity depends on a handful of habits, most of which take seconds and are easy to get wrong.

Use the correct butane, and only that

This is the single most important rule. S.T. Dupont lighters are engineered around a specific gas purity, and the brand's own butane is refined to a standard that leaves minimal residue.

Generic butane carries impurities that settle in the burner and the valve. The symptoms build slowly: a flame that will not reach full height, ignition that takes two or three strikes, then a lighter that will not hold gas at all. By that stage it needs a service.

Using non-approved butane also affects warranty coverage. If a lighter comes in with a fouled burner, that is visible on inspection. Genuine S.T. Dupont butane is inexpensive relative to a repair.

One exception worth knowing: the Defi and XXtreme torch models take a dedicated red butane formulated for the higher-pressure jet mechanism. Check which your lighter takes before refilling.

Purge before you fill

Air trapped in the tank is the most common cause of a weak flame, and almost nobody purges.

Hold the lighter upside down and press the refill valve with a small blunt tool, a paperclip end works, until you hear the hiss stop. That is air and residual gas leaving. Wait about thirty seconds for the tank to return to room temperature, then refill.

Fill in short bursts of two to three seconds rather than one long push. Butane cools sharply as it expands, and a long fill chills the tank enough to give a false full reading. After filling, wait two minutes before striking. Lighting cold gas gives a poor flame and can flare.

Setting the flame

Most models have an adjustment wheel or screw on the base. Turn it in small increments and test between each.

Run the lowest flame that lights your cigar cleanly. An over-tall flame wastes gas, scorches the foot, and on soft-flame models can carbon up the wick area. If the flame will not reach a reasonable height on a full tank, the problem is usually trapped air or the wrong butane, not the adjustment.

Changing a flint

Rollagas models, including the Ligne 1 and Ligne 2, use a replaceable flint. When the wheel spins freely without throwing a spark, or the spark is weak and orange rather than bright, the flint is spent.

Unscrew the flint screw at the base, tip out the remnant and the old spring if fitted, drop in the new flint, and reseat the screw finger-tight. Do not overtighten; the housing thread is soft.

S.T. Dupont supplies flints in two grades and the correct one depends on the model. Grey flints suit the Ligne 1, Ligne 2, Gatsby and Urban. Red flints suit the Ligne 8, Liberte and Ligne D. Fitting the wrong grade gives poor ignition and accelerates wheel wear. Both are available in our flints collection.

The cling

The Ligne 2's distinctive ring when the cap opens is a by-product of the case construction, not a feature that is tuned. If the sound changes noticeably, becoming dull or flat, the hinge or case has usually taken a knock. It is worth having looked at, because a case that has shifted will eventually affect the seal.

What not to do

Do not disassemble the burner. The valve assembly is set to a tolerance and cannot be reliably reset by hand.

Do not clean lacquer with solvent. Chinese lacquer is applied in many hand-polished layers and alcohol will cloud it permanently. A dry microfibre cloth is all it needs.

Do not leave it in a car. Heat raises tank pressure, and repeated cycling stresses the seals.

Do not store it empty for long periods. The seals stay in better condition with gas in the tank.

When to have it serviced

Book a service if the lighter will not hold gas after a proper purge and refill, if ignition has become unreliable with a fresh flint, or if the cap no longer closes squarely. These are mechanical faults, and left alone they get more expensive rather than less.
