Caring for a Cashmere Throw
Cashmere and fine wool reward a light touch. Looked after properly, a Johnstons of Elgin throw becomes softer with use and lasts for many years. Most of the care it needs is simply not doing too much.
Day to day
Air a throw rather than washing it. Shaking it out and leaving it over a chair near an open window refreshes the fibre. When it is not in use, fold it rather than hanging it, so the weight of the cloth does not pull it out of shape.
Pilling
A little pilling in the first weeks is normal with any fine natural fibre: loose short fibres work their way to the surface where the throw is rubbed most. Lift them away by hand, or with a cashmere comb used gently in one direction. Pilling usually settles once those loose fibres are gone.
Washing
Always follow the care label sewn into the piece, as the right method depends on the fibre and the construction. When a throw does need cleaning, treat it gently: no hot water, no wringing and no tumble-drying. Dry it flat, away from direct heat and sunlight, easing it back into shape while damp.
Storing
Store throws clean, as moths are drawn to soiled fibre. Fold them into a breathable cotton bag rather than plastic, and add cedar to the drawer or cupboard. In spring and autumn, take them out, air them and refold them along different lines.
