THE MAISON
S.T. Dupont has worked in Paris since 1872. Every lighter is made in France from lacquer, brass and precious metal, and a single piece can take four to five months to complete — which is why a S.T. Dupont is chosen much the way a watch is chosen.
THE FLAME
The decision that matters most. A soft flame is gentle on a fine cigar and carries the maison’s signature ring; it rewards an unhurried lighting indoors. A jet — or torch — flame burns hotter, lights faster and holds steady in wind, which makes it the practical companion outdoors. A few models offer both.
FOR CLASSIC ELEGANCE
Ligne 2 is the reference. Its dual soft flame and the distinctive “cling” as the cap opens are the hallmarks connoisseurs listen for, and it is offered in more finishes than any other line — brushed palladium through yellow gold to deep natural lacquer. It is not windproof; the soft flame is its character rather than a compromise.
Le Grand answers the same brief in a more contemporary register. Adjusting the ignition switches it between a dual soft flame and a single jet torch, so one lighter covers the armchair and the terrace, and the case work often carries intricate guilloché. Its ring is quieter than the Ligne 2’s, depending on the model.
FOR WIND AND THE OUTDOORS
MaxiJet takes the opposite approach: a single powerful torch flame, highly wind-resistant, built for robust everyday use. It forgoes the cling that defines the Ligne 2.
Megajet offers the same dependability in a stronger torch — sure-footed outdoors, though without the high-lacquer finishes of the classic lines.
THE FINISH
Only once the flame is settled does finish come into play — brushed palladium for restraint, gold for warmth, lacquer for depth. Every option is built on the same serviceable architecture, so the choice is about how the lighter should feel in the pocket and in the hand.
