THE DESIGN
Calacatta is quarried in the same Apuan Alps as Carrara, but is the rarer of the two: where Carrara reads as a soft, even grey-white, Calacatta is prized for its bright white body crossed by bold, dramatic veining in gold and grey. Each slab is distinct, and the cut is chosen so the veining falls across the piece rather than running off one edge.
THE CRAFT
The bowl is cut on a CNC and the outer edge is then split by hand, the same way the old stonemasons worked, so the raw, quarry-cut face is left exposed against the polished hollow. No two pieces break the same way, which makes each ashtray genuinely one of a kind. Every finishing pass after the cut is done entirely by hand.
THE RITUAL
The bowl is cut deep, so a cigar's ash column falls rather than banking against the rim, and the rests hold a 50-ring cigar without it rolling free. At 2.5 kg it stays planted on the table between draws. Marble is the right material for the job beyond looks: it takes a lit cigar set down mid-smoke without scorching, and it does not hold odour between sessions the way ceramic and wood do.

CARE
Clean the polished bowl with a soft, barely damp cloth only — acidic and limescale products etch polished stone permanently. The split faces are meant to stay raw and need no treatment. Handmade from natural materials: expect gentle variation in veining and tone from the photograph.
