THE DESIGN

A tribute to the more than twelve million immigrants who passed through Ellis Island between 1892 and 1954. Flags of the nations that sent the greatest numbers are displayed in high and low relief in guilloché and hot enamel, with the American flag at the front of the cap over the outline of the Statue of Liberty. The torch on the clip lights the way to freedom, the seal of Public Health adorns the top of the cap and a detention stamp is engraved at the bottom of the barrel. This roller ball is finished in White with 18-karat gold vermeil over .925 sterling silver.

THE CRAFT

Hand-crafted from .925 sterling silver. Each component passes through multiple stages of precision engraving to create the guilloché pattern, then hard enamel — glass, water and metal oxides ground by hand with a mortar and pestle — is applied with a quill, kiln-fired at over 1,000 °F, filed back by hand with a diamond file and fired again until the enamel fills every valley of the engraving. The pieces are then polished and buffed to the velvet finish of true translucent hard enamel. A five-year apprenticeship is required to master the process.

THE COLLECTION

The Ellis Island Collection is the 34th in the David Oscarson series of Limited Edition writing instruments. Each colour variation is limited to 62 pieces, including fountain pen and roller ball styles, and every piece is numbered.

THE WRITING

The roller ball version of the collection — the same sterling silver, guilloché and hard-enamel body as the fountain pen, with a capped roller ball section that takes a standard roller ball refill for an effortless, consistent line.
