THE DESIGN

The Ugly Duckling, told in sterling silver and hot enamel. From the base of the barrel a hatching egg and shell fragments rise in white or opalescent enamel; three ducklings and their footprints are engraved in low relief where the clear water meets the duckyard, with the young cygnet set a little higher. Outlined in high relief, the mature swan is featured in guilloché and hot enamel with its reflection mirrored below over a rippled-water pattern. The clip is a cracking egg and the crown carries H.C. Andersen's signature. This roller ball is finished in Black & White with 18-karat gold vermeil over .925 sterling silver.

THE CRAFT

Hand-crafted from .925 sterling silver. Each component passes through multiple stages of precision engraving to create the guilloché pattern, then hard enamel — glass, water and metal oxides ground by hand with a mortar and pestle — is applied with a quill, kiln-fired at over 1,000 °F, filed back by hand with a diamond file and fired again until the enamel fills every valley of the engraving. The pieces are then polished and buffed to the velvet finish of true translucent hard enamel. A five-year apprenticeship is required to master the process.

THE COLLECTION

The Hans Christian Andersen Collection is the 38th in the David Oscarson series of Limited Edition writing instruments. Every piece is individually numbered. Each colour variation is limited to 70 pieces, one for each year of Andersen's life. Pen World Readers' Choice Award winner 2024.

THE WRITING

The roller ball version of the collection — the same sterling silver, guilloché and hard-enamel body as the fountain pen, with a capped roller ball section that takes a standard roller ball refill for an effortless, consistent line.
