THE DESIGN
Nero Portoro is quarried at Portovenere in Liguria and has been celebrated since Roman times as one of Italy's most prestigious black marbles, its deep black surface threaded with gold and white veining. It has always been treated as a precious material rather than a building one: the gold runs in defined bands, so a block has to be read and cut along those bands rather than simply sliced. It is the slowest marble in the collection to work and the least forgiving, which is why it sits at the top of the Diamond range. No two slabs are alike, and no two of these humidors will be either. This Large Diamond puts that material to work at full display scale.
THE CRAFT
Twenty-eight kilos of marble do something a wooden humidor cannot: they resist temperature change. A room that warms three degrees over an afternoon moves the interior of a thin-walled box almost immediately, whereas here the stone absorbs most of that swing before it reaches the cigars. Since temperature stability is what protects tobacco over years of ageing, the weight is the specification rather than a side effect of it. Boveda packs supply the moisture, working in both directions — releasing it when the interior dries and reabsorbing it when the level climbs — and a dynamic dual-fan ventilation system circulates that humidity through the cabinet, so over 70 cm and more than a hundred cigars the far end holds the same level as the packs themselves. There is no distilled water and no sponge: the packs are replaced when they begin to stiffen, typically every two to four months. Internal LED lighting turns the interior into a display the moment the drawer opens. The humidor opens on a solid oak drawer with a Blumotion soft-close mechanism rather than a lid, so opening it does not release the conditioned air in a single movement, and solid timber rather than veneer keeps the front flat over years of humid air on one face and dry room air on the other. Interior lined in Okoumé.
SPECIFICATIONS
• Size: H 15 cm × L 70 cm × D 36 cm • Weight: 28 kg net • Material: solid Nero Portoro marble, solid oak drawer front, Okoumé interior • Capacity: 120 Toro cigars (approx. 135 Robusto), varies with ring gauge • Humidification: Boveda system, dynamic ventilation, internal LED lighting • Blumotion soft-close drawer • Made in Italy • Made to order: allow 4–6 weeks from the atelier plus transit to Canada • Includes luxury fabric packaging and presentation box
WHO THIS IS FOR
• A lounge, study or cigar room where the humidor is meant to be seen • A collection of several boxes kept ageing alongside what is being smoked • The collector who wants stone or rare wood rather than another cedar box • A milestone gift
CARE
Keep the humidor below roughly 21 °C and out of direct sun — above about 24 °C tobacco beetle eggs can hatch inside a cigar. Clean the marble with a soft, barely damp cloth only: acidic and limescale products etch polished stone permanently. Handmade from natural materials: expect gentle variation in veining and tone from the photograph.
