David Oscarson - Carl Milles - Roller Ball Pen Azure Blue, Black & White

THE DESIGN

Marriage of the Waters — inspired by Carl Milles' great St. Louis fountain symbolising the meeting of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers, and a celebration of David and Veronica Oscarson's wedding anniversary (Veronica drew all of the line art). Unique to this collection is the merging of two colours of hot enamel without a dividing silver border, over a meandering double-lined diamond-cut guilloché current. The St. Louis city flag symbol crowns the cap in translucent white enamel, the Stockholm city flag sits at the bottom of the barrel and Milles' signature is engraved on the gripping section. This roller ball is finished in Azure Blue, Black & White with polished .925 sterling silver.

THE CRAFT

Hand-crafted from .925 sterling silver. Each component passes through multiple stages of precision engraving to create the guilloché pattern, then hard enamel — glass, water and metal oxides ground by hand with a mortar and pestle — is applied with a quill, kiln-fired at over 1,000 °F, filed back by hand with a diamond file and fired again until the enamel fills every valley of the engraving. The pieces are then polished and buffed to the velvet finish of true translucent hard enamel. A five-year apprenticeship is required to master the process.

THE COLLECTION

The Carl Milles Collection is the 32nd in the David Oscarson series of Limited Edition writing instruments. Every piece is individually numbered. Each design variation is limited to 80 pieces, representing the 80 years of Carl Milles' life.

THE WRITING

The roller ball version of the collection — the same sterling silver, guilloché and hard-enamel body as the fountain pen, with a capped roller ball section that takes a standard roller ball refill for an effortless, consistent line.
