THE DESIGN

A tribute to the more than 4,000 workers who completed the first transcontinental railroad at Promontory Summit, Utah on 10 May 1869. The routes of the two engines, Jupiter from Sacramento and No. 119 from Omaha, run along cap and barrel to meet at Promontory Summit; each of the seven states is marked in high relief with its own guilloché pattern and the engines are reverse-engraved beneath the enamel. Central Pacific and Union Pacific stand in high relief at top and bottom, and the gripping section carries the start and finish dates with the words engraved on the original Golden Spike. This roller ball is finished in White, Ruby Red & Black with 18-karat gold vermeil over .925 sterling silver.

THE CRAFT

Hand-crafted from .925 sterling silver. Each component passes through multiple stages of precision engraving to create the guilloché pattern, then hard enamel — glass, water and metal oxides ground by hand with a mortar and pestle — is applied with a quill, kiln-fired at over 1,000 °F, filed back by hand with a diamond file and fired again until the enamel fills every valley of the engraving. The pieces are then polished and buffed to the velvet finish of true translucent hard enamel. A five-year apprenticeship is required to master the process.

THE COLLECTION

The Golden Spike Collection is the 30th in the David Oscarson series of Limited Edition writing instruments. Each colour variation is limited to 150 pieces, including fountain pen and roller ball styles, and every piece is numbered.

THE WRITING

The roller ball version of the collection — the same sterling silver, guilloché and hard-enamel body as the fountain pen, with a capped roller ball section that takes a standard roller ball refill for an effortless, consistent line.
