About this collection

On May 10, 1869, the Central Pacific and Union Pacific railroads met at Promontory Summit, Utah, completing the world’s first transcontinental railroad and uniting the Atlantic and Pacific coasts by rail. The Golden Spike Collection stands as a tribute to the more than 4,000 workers, many of them Chinese and Irish immigrants, who made that extraordinary feat possible.

The routes of the two engines, Jupiter from Sacramento and No. 119 from Omaha and Council Bluffs, trace along the cap and barrel to meet at Promontory Summit, with each of the seven states marked in high relief and its own guilloché pattern. The engines themselves appear in reverse engraving beneath the enamel, while Central Pacific and Union Pacific, with emblems of the era, adorn the top and bottom. The gripping section carries the start and finish dates and the words engraved on the original Golden Spike.

Translucent and opaque hard enamels are finished with gold vermeil.
