David Oscarson - Rosetta Stone - Roller Ball Pen Sapphire Blue

THE DESIGN

The first David Oscarson collection with moving parts: each barrel is divided into three rotating sections representing the three scripts of the stone — hieroglyphic, demotic and Greek — each engraved with the inscriptions Ptolemy, Ever-Living and Beloved of Ptah. The Winged Disk of Horus is inlaid in opaque enamel on the cap, the face of an original coin of Ptolemy V crowns the cap with its eagle reverse at the base of the barrel, and the Ankh sits at the base of the clip. This roller ball is finished in Sapphire Blue with polished .925 sterling silver.

THE CRAFT

Hand-crafted from .925 sterling silver. Each component passes through multiple stages of precision engraving to create the guilloché pattern, then hard enamel — glass, water and metal oxides ground by hand with a mortar and pestle — is applied with a quill, kiln-fired at over 1,000 °F, filed back by hand with a diamond file and fired again until the enamel fills every valley of the engraving. The pieces are then polished and buffed to the velvet finish of true translucent hard enamel. A five-year apprenticeship is required to master the process.

THE COLLECTION

The Rosetta Stone Collection is the 21st in the David Oscarson series of Limited Edition writing instruments. Each colour variation is limited to 77 pieces, including fountain pen and roller ball styles, and every piece is numbered. Three rotating barrel sections — align the Greek text to read the inscriptions in their original order.

THE WRITING

The roller ball version of the collection — the same sterling silver, guilloché and hard-enamel body as the fountain pen, with a capped roller ball section that takes a standard roller ball refill for an effortless, consistent line.
