THE FORMULA

A hand-wrapped, finely milled soap made with a vegetable base that produces a rich, creamy lather, with added shea butter to help moisturise the skin and leave it soft and delicately scented. The skill and time Floris devotes to scenting the hard soap, and the process of stamping each bar with the iconic Floris design, remain unchanged: the house still uses the same mould originally created in the early 1800s. For all their history, these soaps look equally at home beside a traditional Belfast or pedestal basin as on the edge of a contemporary installation.

THE SCENT

No.89 takes its classical cologne character from orange and bergamot blended with lavender and neroli. A touch of spicy nutmeg warms the floral heart, which rests on a dominant woody accord of sandalwood, cedarwood and vetiver: a quintessentially English gentleman’s fragrance. Named for 89 Jermyn Street, No.89 was the signature scent of Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond.

THE HOUSE

Floris has traded from 89 Jermyn Street, in London’s St James’s, since 1730, when Juan Famenias Floris and his wife Elizabeth opened their shop. Every Floris fragrance is still created in the perfumery at the back of that shop, and the house has held Royal Warrants since 1820. Floris soaps are still hand-wrapped at the house’s premises in Devon.
