HANDCRAFTED IN GREECE
Manopoulos has made games in Greece since 1970 — from Costas Manopoulos’s first bronze chess pieces to today’s workshop in Thebes, where every board is still cut, veneered and finished by hand. This piece comes to Canada exclusively through El Laguito Cigars.
THE DESIGN
The classic Manopoulos chess set: an inlaid chessboard laid into the lid of a wooden case, with weighted Staunton chessmen stored inside. Choose walnut, olive burl or walnut burl veneer and one of three sizes, from a 27 cm travel set to a 43 cm board with 3.5-inch pieces.
THE CRAFT
Each board is veneered and inlaid by hand in Thebes — the light and dark squares are individual pieces of wood, not print — then lacquered. The Staunton chessmen are turned wood, weighted and felted.
