On Friday the 13th of October, 1307, Jacques de Molay, Grand Master of the Knights Templar, was arrested in France along with every Templar who could be found, on charges manufactured by King Philip IV. After six and a half years of interrogation and torture, he was offered the chance to confess in public and instead declared the Order innocent.
On March 14, 1314, the day he was burned at the stake, de Molay refused to buy his life with a lie: "Life is offered to me, but at the price of infamy. At such a price, life is not worth having." He gave his life for the integrity of his Brothers when he could have saved it for himself.
This commemorative David Oscarson writing instrument honours his martyrdom, serving as a reminder of that sacrifice and of the value of freedom of religion.
